Six chapters trace Doyen's career and discuss his early years in Paris and Rome, his interest in history painting, important religious and royal commissions, his work and beliefs during the revolution, and finally his final years as professor of the Imperial Academy of Saint Petersburg. Followed by a revised catalogue of over 100 signed, attributed, and rejected works. Each work is illustrated in black and white and described. Followed by appendices featuring a chronology, transcribed documents, a reconstruction of Doyen's library catalogue and print collection, a poem by Alexander Christoforovich Vostokov, a list of Doyen's students, a catalogue of works as referenced in previous publications, and finally excerpts from contemporary reviews of Doyen's works.  Text in French.
