The Farnese Drawings Collection

by Claire Van Cleave

Rome: 2024.

256 pages, black and white and color illustrations. Paperback. 24 x 28cms.

Catalogue of the 57 drawings of Farnese provenance still residing in the Capodimonte, Naples. The first part reviews the history of the collection under pope Paul III and cardinals Ranuccio, Alessandro and Odoardo, and the involvement of Conte Ludovico Tedesco, artist Giulio Clovio and curator-librarian Fulvio Orsini in their acquisitions. The second part considers the original 850 works in the Farnese collection and examines the remaining 57, proposing a number of updated attributions to artists such as Parmigianino, Bartolomeo Passarotti and Giovanna Garzoni.
