Proof for Roger Fry’s Christmas Card by Eric Gill
A wood-engraving cut by Eric Gill as a Christmas card for Roger Fry in December 1910.
Signed with Gill’s device of a hand and eye.
This collaboration comes from early in the modernists' relationship, with Gill’s new sculptural work gaining the attention of the critic. Two years later, eight works by Gill would be included in the Second Post-Impressionism Exhibition organised by Fry at the Grafton Galleries.
The present card reportedly encouraged Fry to make his own in 1912 and 1913.
