An exploration of Guercino's relationship with the Ludovisi dynasty, led by Pope Gregory XV. Three essays trace and contextualise Geurcino's move to Rome and his papal commissions. Followed by a catalogue of 120 works divided into ten sections, each with an introductory essay. Themes include studies for frescoes, the influence of the antique, Guercino's work in Bologna, and pastoral landscape. All works - most by Guercino along with contemporaries like Guido Reni, Annibale and Ludovico Carracci, Dosso Dossi, Anthony Van Dyck, and Nicolas Poussin - are illustrated and discussed in detail.
