by Nils Büttner

2 volumes. 802 pages with 268 illustrations in colour. Hardback. 27 x 18cms.

The Medici Series: twenty-four paintings produced by Rubens between 1622 and 1625 for the first of two contracts known as the Medici Commission. The paintings decorate the western gallery of the Luxembourg Palace, depicting allegorical scenes from the life of the Queen Mother, Maria de' Medici (1573-1642), offering insight into her relationship with her late husband Henri IV (1553-1610) and her son Louis XIII (1601-43) as well as her role as Queen Mother after her husband's death. Volume 1 is text, detailing the process of the Medici Commission and continuing the Catalogue Raisonnee, accompanied by 268 illustrations in Volume 2.
The second contract of the Commission was for a second gallery in the eastern wing of the palace which remained unfinished after 1631, the paintings in which would have commemorated Henri IV.
