The Strozzi Album: Hardstone, Marble, Art and Wonder in Late Baroque Rome
by Adriano Aymonino and Silvia Davoli
Galerie Kugel, 2026.
128 pages, fully illustrated in colour. Hardback.
Commissioned around 1695-1699 by Leone Strozzi (1657-1722), a leading Roman antiquary and collector of Florentine origin, the albums consist of two leather-bound volumes, each comprising 18 and 20 folios respectively. 153 selected specimens of rare ancient marbles and hardstones are mounted on sheets covered with vellum. These are here shown in facsimile, preceded by an essay on Leone Strozzi's museum in his palace at Piazza delle Sacre Stimmate, a presentation of lithological studies and the Accademia dell'Arcadia, a discussion of the craftsmen involved (Giardini, Torricelli and the Andreoli brothers) and an introduction to the different types of stones in the albums, their shape and display.
