Contemporary speckled calf, spines elaborately gilt in compartments, red morocco labels, marbled pastedowns.  Title pages printed in red and black.  Attractive, 20th-century bookplates.  Engraved historiated initials.  Boards rubbed and scuffed with some shallow gouges in the calf, some wear and worming to the spines, particularly that of volume II, gutter of volume II cracked at page 288, scattered spotting and tanning of contents.  Very good condition.

Provenance Pietro Toesca, with his ex libris on front paste down.  First edition. 

Author Lione Pascoli (1674-1744) was an abbot, reforming economist, and art collector from Perugia who spent much of his career in Rome.  This, his most important work, contains the biographies of hundreds of contemporary artists and is a particularly rich source of information on the artists of Perugia.
