An account of the Kunstmuseum Basel's acquisition of twenty one works of 'degenerate art' in 1937. Twenty essays contextualise and discuss the works acquired, the transaction itself, and the state of the art market at the time. Several texts focus on specific collections (the Kestner-Museum Hannover, Nationalgalerie Berlin, and Museum Folkwang Essen) as well as on individual works ('Animal Destinies' by Franz Marc, 'The Pinch of Snuff/ Rabbi' by Marc Chagall, and 'The Bride of the Wind' by Oskar Kokoschka). With a chronology from 1933-1945 and a catalogue of 47 works, with notes on provenance.
