Seven essays discuss the lived experiences of laundresses in Paris, the use of the motif by other artists like Fernand Pelez and Marie Petiet, Degas's depiction of cotton manufacturing and the influence of Zola's 'L'Assommoir'. Includes a catalogue of Degas's 14 laundress works as well as 87 photographs and works by other artists. The appendix features writings about laundresses from the late 19th century as well as a chronology of Degas's life alongside the Parisian laundry industry.
