Two volumes present the collection of French paintings from the 16th to the 20th centuries in the National Galleries of Scotland. Volume one discusses the museum's collecting history and lists works alphabetically by artist, beginning with Jules Bastien-Lepage and ending with Jean-Louis Forain. Volume two continues with Louis Gauffier to Jean-Antoine Watteau. Each entry includes an artist biography and an illustration and discussion of the work or works in the collection. Discussions include technical notes and provenance. Other artists include: Adolphe Monticelli, Nicolas Poussin and Rosa Bonheur.
