Gerrit Jensen: Royal Cabinet Maker 1635-1715
by Adam Bowett
184 pages, 168 colour and 12 black & white illustrations. Hardback. 28 x 23cms.
First overview of Gerrit Jensen's work, from the time he arrived in England in 1667 until his death in 1715. Looking at the workings of Jensen's business in the context of the London furniture trade (furniture forms, bookkeeping, packing and transport, payment, credit bonds and notes of hand), the study discusses Jensen's work for the Great Wardrobe under James II, William III and Queen Ann, and identifies the furniture surviving in the Royal Collections today.
A separate section is dedicated to furnishings commissioned for Montagu House, Burghley, Chatsworth, Drayton, Ham, Hartfield, Knole and Petworth. The appendices contain full transcripts of Jensen's Great Wardrobe bills from 1680 to 1714, his will and subsequent legal disputes, his inventories and fire insurance policy.
