Published to accompany a comprehensive exhibition on Guillaume Lethiere's life and work. The Caribbean-born artist moved to France in the late-18th century and became widely popular, holding important positions at the Academie de France in Rome and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His thematically diverse ouevre is represented by the 112 works on display  - Lethiere painted numerous scenes from history and mythology, with highlights including 'The Death of Virginia' and 'Brutus Condemning his Sons to Death'. Seven essays also discuss the presence of Caribbean artists in France and the political climate they worked in, before and after the French Revolution and during the Napoleonic period.
