An interdisciplinary study of the gardens established by Maximilian I on the Island of Lokrum. Eleven chapters trace and reconstruct the gardens' development; discussing the influence of 19th-century garden culture, the duke's relationship with Lokrum, the island's landscape before the project, and the responsibilities of the estate's staff and gardeners. Also looking at the identification and reconstruction of sites across the island including Romanesque and Gothic cloisters and tree-lined pathways, a catalogue of exotic species, and farm and Imperial life on the island. Followed by appendices featuring Maximillian's letters to his wife, Charlotte, and a table of horticultural species planted during Maximilian's time. Includes many period plans and drawings paired with contemporary photographs.
