Three chapters trace Lagrenée's career, discussing his activity within the French Academy and Salons in Paris and Rome; commissions for influential patrons including members of royal families, Lord Hoare and the Marquis de Laborde; and Lagrenée's career upon his return to Paris after the Revolution. Followed by a catalogue of 942 signed works, 12 attributions and 13 works no longer attributed to Lagrenée some with extended notes and black and white illustrations. An extensive appendix features a family tree, a chronology and tables and lists based on archival material including a table documenting his Roman commissions and a list of subjects chosen for history paintings. Includes excerpts from various archives, his travel diary and of critical reviews up to the present. Also features a chronology of works presented at the Salons, an index of names and works and an extensive bibliography.
