An examination of the meanings of wood and greenery - real and depicted - within late Medieval Germany's religious art and cultural consciousness. Four chapters discuss the Cross's imagined lineage, the subsumption of spiritual traditions surrounding Springtime including the Maypole into Christian imagery, the allusion to the healing properties of plants in Grunewald's oeuvre and viticultural motifs on reliquaires and altarpieces.
