The Turkish Boudoir of Marie Antoinette and Josephine at Fontainebleau

byVincent Cochet and Alexia Lebeurre

Paris: 2023. 208 pages, 220 colour illustrations. Hardback. 27x20cms. Text in French.

Within ten years, Marie-Antoinette comissioned the redecoration of two rooms in Fontainebleau, the Turkish Boudoir (1777), and the Silver Boudoir (1786). When Joséphine became Empress, the craze for turqueries and chinoiseries had not faded. Both a lover of Marie-Antoinette and of her style, Josephine made hers the Turkish Boudoir emptied at the Revolution. She enhanced the luxury of the oriental atmosphere adding new pieces of furniture, mahogany, gilt bronzes and curtains made of brocade, silk and gold. The catalogue discusses the recent painstaking restoration of these rooms.
