The cigarette is a frequent motif in Hirst’s work, which is often to do with mortality, death and permanence. Here a screen print of burnt-out cigarette butts has been transposed onto a porcelain plate, with the ashtray edges cleverly mirroring the shape of the plate beneath.

The plate was created by fashionable tableware firm Swid Powell, which was founded by in New York in 1982 by Nan Swid and Addie Powell, and which was responsible for many fashionable collaborations with names of the day, including Zaha Hadid, Richard Meier and Michael Graves.
