The Goddess Demeter
Agate Cameo, Early 19th Century
Two layered agate cameo of Demeter, the goddess of grain, agriculture, harvest, growth, and nourishment, who presided over grains and the fertility of the earth.
The goddess is depicted in profile, wearing a diadem. The mother of Persephone, Demeter was one of the most ancient Greco-Roman deities, and at the centre of the secretive rites of the Eleusinian Mysteries.
Mounted as a brooch in gold with granulation, both Rome 1830’s, with French control marks. Indistinctly signed with monogram on the back.
